Schools were on lockdown in the Jackson Township, Ohio, after a seventh-grade student reportedly shot himself in the boy's bathroom on Tuesday morning.

The Jackson Memorial Middle School student was found by people inside the school after suffering an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound just before 8 a.m., according to Cleveland.com. It has not been established whether he was alone at the time of the shooting.

The seventh grader was rushed to hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, CBS News reported.

Meanwhile police are investigating how the gun got into the school and whether the shooting was an accident or an intentional incident.

According to the school district, the Jackson middle school and high school were on lockdown while all four elementary schools were closed for the day.

Students were being released to their parents, who had gathered outside the school to reunite with their children, WKYC reported.

One mother of an eighth-grader at the Jackson Memorial Middle School, told ABC News that she noticed a commotion outside the middle school while driving to drop her third-grade daughter off.

"I just pulled in waiting to hear further information," she said. "I just want to get my daughter and hug her and hold her. I thought it would never happen here but obviously, that is not the case."
