A “Scarface” reunion panel at the Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday night in New York had its share of awkward moments and a raucous audience that shouted movie lines and booed a question about Michelle Pfeiffer’s weight by the moderator.
Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, director Brian De Palma, and Pfeiffer were present for the panel, which also included a screening of the movie.
When the moderator asked Pfeiffer how much she weighed during the filming of the 1983 crime drama in which she played a drug addict, an audience member shouted out, “Why do you want to know?!” and others booed, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Pfeiffer said she didn’t know how much she weighed and admitted that she became thinner as the movie progressed, adding that what was supposed to be a three or four month shoot turned into six months, forcing her to maintain her emaciated appearance for longer than she thought she would have to.
“I think I was living on tomato soup and Marlboros,” she said, EW reported.
The panel also revealed that Cuban-American Bauer, who played Pacino’s best friend, helped Pacino with his Cuban accent and general preparation for the role of Tony, Rolling Stone reported.
Pacino shared that he and Martin Bregman originally wanted Sidney Lumet (“Dog Day Afternoon”) to direct, but they turned to De Palma after Lumet didn’t work out.
Pacino also recounted the shooting of the film’s final gunfight scene, in which he badly burned his hand by grabbing the barrel of a gun that was hot from just having been fired. “My hand stuck to it,” Pacino said, Rolling Stone reported. “We had to go to the hospital.”
The audience was noisy during the screening, yelling out lines from the iconic film and even arguing and cursing at each other, Rolling Stone said.
