A "Scarface" remake has been green-lit by Universal Pictures, and sources say the new film will be set in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote Wednesday that the 1983 movie — which features Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino as Tony Montana — was in fact a remake of a 1932 film. That means the new rework will be the third "Scarface" film.

The original movie was set in Chicago among Irish and Italian mobsters, and revolved around bootlegging. The Pacino version of "Scarface" was set in Miami, where Cuban immigrant Montana went from rags to riches by becoming a cocaine kingpin. The new film will be set in Los Angeles, and is likely to tell a similar story about a Mexican, Central American, or South American immigrant.

Pacino won't be in the remake. When reporters caught up with him on Wednesday night for the New York premiere of his new film, "Danny Collins," Pacino said of the new project, "Oh, it's fine."

"It's part of what we do. We remake things," Pacino told the Reporter as he walked the red carpet. "I may remake a movie I saw recently. I can't say what it is. It's about 50 years old."

Writer Jonathan Herman has been tasked with writing the new script. Herman is famous for rap biopic "Straight Outta Compton" and is currently working on "The Demonologist" and a remake of "The Birds."

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín will direct.
