Ruthie Ann Miles' 4-year-old daughter, Abigail Blumenstein, was killed and the Tony Award-winning actress injured when they and three other pedestrians were struck by a car that allegedly ran a red light in Brooklyn, New York, early Monday afternoon.
Another child, Joshua Lew was also killed in the accident, and two other adults were also struck including Lew's mother, People magazine reported.
Miles, 34, who is pregnant, was in stable condition at Brooklyn Hospital early Tuesday, and her friend Lauren Lew is also reported to be recovering, Entertainment Weekly reported.
The driver, a 44-year-old female, continued down the street after hitting the pedestrians and finally hit some parked cars and stopped, Lieutenant John Grimpel of the NYPD told People. An NYPD source said that the woman claimed to have had a seizure. She is in stable condition.
Miles won a Tony Award for best actress in a musical for “The King and I” in 2015. A GoFundMe page has been set up by friends and family members to cover medical expenses and has raised over $186,000 in less than 24 hours.
An update to the GoFundMe page says that Miles' unborn child was not harmed when she was struck.
Many in the Broadway community have offered help and support as well as condolences to Miles on Twitter after the tragedy.
