Rose McGowan spoke out on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" show after Harvey Weinstein's arrest on Friday morning in New York City and her words were simple yet powerful – “We got you," E! News reported.
The "Charmed" actress, who was one of the first women to publicly accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment and rape last year, told Megyn Kelly she "didn't believe this day would come" after the Hollywood mogul was arraigned on charges of rape and a criminal sex act.
The charges against Weinstein relate to a different actress. They mark the first criminal prosecution to result from the wave of allegations against Weinstein that sparked a national reckoning over sexual misconduct.
"This is a big strike into the heart of abuse of power," McGowan told Kelly. "It shows people worldwide, which is what I was hoping the whole time, that this cannot and will not stand."
McGowan had reached a $100,000 settlement with Weinstein in connection with an incident in 1997 in a hotel room at the Sundance Film Festival.
The settlement reportedly included a nondisclosure agreement, but since the first wave of accusations against Weinstein broke, McGowan has been calling him out. She perhaps has been the fiercest among dozens of women who villified Weinstein even before the #MeToo movement got rolling.
Weinstein continues to defend himself and intends to enter a plea of not guilty, his lawyer Benjamin Brafman said.
Weinstein has consistently denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex. Brafman said Friday that he would fight to get the charges dismissed, saying they're factually unsupported and constitutionally flawed.
According to The New York Times, Weinstein has until Wednesday to decide if he will testify in front of the grand jury that continues its investigations into the case.
McGowan said the arrest was a victory, but a bittersweet one that saw many women suffer.
"It's tragic that it takes over 100 women and that probably means like 1,000. Let's be real," she told Kelly, according to E! News.
"I mean, this man had hunting grounds over the world. He had accomplices and a complicity machine. He was the cult leader of Hollywood, I would say – their king."
