A robot helped Michigan police arrest a man in a domestic shooting by searching the house where he was believed to be hiding.
The man, 41, allegedly beat his girlfriend and shot at a car after coming to her home on the morning of May 26 with his mother, Michigan Live reported. Police responded to the woman's call and searched for the man but could not find him on their first visit.
The woman, 48, called police again at 2 a.m. on May 27 and said the man was trying to break into the home, Michigan Live reported. The sheriff's special response team responded and searched the property. Police found the man's mother in a trailer on the property and took her to safety.
The woman was also taken to safety, and the response team's robot then searched the woman's residence for the man, who was found inside the residence and arrested safely, Michigan Live reported.
The man was charged with suspicion of aggravated domestic assault, four counts of malicious destruction of property, unlawful entry and interfering with 911 communications, Michigan Live reported.
The arrest was a joint effort between the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office detective bureau, Lapeer County Sheriff's Office, Dryden Police Department and Imlay City Police Department, Michigan Live reported.
Robots are also being used in police departments in places like Dubai and Singapore to assist police and go into situations that may be unsafe, according to The Straits Times.
A study in 2017 predicted that robots could take over up to 40 percent of retail jobs over the next 10 years.
