Randy Travis Congestive Heart Failure: Singer Stable, Improving

Country music legend Randy Travis is in stable condition but is suffering from congestive heart failure, according to The Associated Press.

The congestive heart failure was caused by a viral cariomyopathy infection, the AP said. Travis’ doctors at Baylor Health Care System in Dallas gave a condition update for the singer in a video statement.

“His condition has stabilized, and he has shown signs of improvement,” said Dr. Michael Mack, director of cardiovascular disease, in the video.

Travis was hospitalized three weeks ago.

“He had been in previously excellent health until three weeks prior when he developed a viral upper respiratory illness,” said Dr. William Gray, director of cardiovascular services at Baylor Medical Center in McKinney. “He was admitted at Baylor Mckinney with a presumptive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure.”

As Travis’ illness progressed, he was transferred to Baylor’s Heart Hospital in Plano, the doctors stated.

Two days ago, Travis’ publicist denied that the singer had heart surgery, but said he was implanted with a device to help blood flow, according to CNN. The singer recently performed in Detroit and Chicago at the end of June, and didn’t seem to be feeling unwell, CNN reported from Travis’ publicist.

CNN quoted a Mayo Clinic article describing the device implanted in Travis, calling it “an implantable mechanical pump that helps pump blood from the lower chambers of your heart to the rest of your body.”

Travis, 54, is a Grammy-award winning singer and songwriter. He’s known for such hits as “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “On the Other Hand.”
