Puerto Rico School's Power Returns in Heartwarming Viral Video

By    |   Thursday, 18 January 2018 05:08 PM EST

When a Puerto Rico school's power came back on last week after being out for 112 days following Hurricane Maria, students and teachers alike celebrated in a heartwarming video that's gone viral.

The short video on the Facebook page of the Academia Bautista de Puerto Nuevo in San Juan shows students jumping up and down and running through the halls and teachers ringing bells after the electricity was turned back on for the first time since Sept. 20 when nearly the entire island’s power was wiped out by Maria.

The joyful video has been viewed more than 388,000 times and shared over 7,200 times, inspiring many to be grateful for the conveniences they enjoy.

The school's students had studied without electricity for three months while crews worked on restoring power to the island.

More than 500,000 people were still without power in late December, and power crews are still traveling to the island to help restore power to areas that need help getting back online. Inside Edition reported nearly 1,500 workers from the U.S. mainland will travel to Puerto Rico this week to help with the effort.

The Army Corps of Engineers said power should be restored to most Puerto Ricans by March.

While some on Twitter blamed the U.S. government for not getting the power back on sooner, others were moved by the school's joy.
