Entertainer Jennifer Lopez will donate $1 million from her Las Vegas residency for the Puerto Rico hurricane relief effort after Hurricane Maria devastated the island last week.

Lopez, who was born in the Bronx, New York, but is of Puerto Rican heritage, is co-chairing New York state's recovery effort for the island territory.

In a video on her Instagram page, Lopez said she has yet to hear from family living in Puerto Rico.

Lopez joined other Puerto Rican celebrities and Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday to launch the state effort to funnel aid to the island, including donations from businesses and encouraging New Yorkers to drop off needed supplies.

"Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and today Puerto Rico needs our help," Lopez said at Manhattan's Javits Center, where donations will be coordinated, the New York Daily News reported.

"The consequences have been disastrous. Lives have been lost. Power is down across the entire island," Lopez said. "More than 15,000 people have been forced into shelters, and the storm has devastated the lives of thousands of others."

"New York has a long and proud history of standing up to help those in need, and with millions of Puerto Ricans suffering, we must do everything we can to help our Puerto Rican neighbors recover," Cuomo said in a statement on his website.

Life for many of the 3.4 million residents on Puerto Rico has been a struggle since Maria slammed into the island Wednesday. Most are still without power and a communications network.

The storm came on shore as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds clocked at 155 miles per hour.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told CNN on Monday that the island, which was already mired in a long economic crisis, will need federal help and donations to get back on its feet.

"Puerto Rico is part of the United States, and we need to take swift action," Rosselló told CNN. "This is a major disaster."

"We need something tangible, a bill that actually answers to our need right now. Otherwise, there will be a humanitarian crisis. There will be a massive exodus to the United States," Rosselló continued.
