The popular 1990 movie "Pretty Woman" is set to become a Broadway musical opening in fall 2018.
The romantic comedy about a rich businessman who falls in love with a prostitute starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Bryan Adams will write the musical score for the musical, The New York Times reported. Tony Award-winner Steve Kazee ("Once") will play businessman Edward Lewis and Samantha Barks ("Les Miserables" movie) will make her Broadway debut as prostitute Vivian.
The movie grossed $463 million worldwide. J. F. Lawton will adapt the script using some material from a book by late director Garry Marshall, the Times reported. Jerry Mitchell will direct. The production will run for five weeks in Chicago in the spring before coming to Broadway.
"From the first time I saw this magical movie I felt it cried out to be a musical," Mitchell said, People magazine reported. "'Pretty Woman' is a classic story with a very contemporary message. I think we all want to fall deeply in love with someone—it is something you never stop hoping for."
Mitchell also said he worked with Marshall on the musical adaptation before he died and that Mitchell wanted his "sense of humor, his joy, his uplifting attitude in life," and love for the characters to "infuse" the musical, People reported.
Producer Paula Wagner told Rolling Stone that Mitchell "expanded the narrative and storytelling" of the original and that the changes provided "a new and satisfying emotional resonance."
