Celebrity plastic surgeon nicknamed "Dr. Bumbum" is on the run after one of his patients died just hours after undergoing an operation at the doctor's home in Brazil, Sky News reported Wednesday.
Dr. Denis Furtado, 45, had become popular throughout Brazil on social media, with 650,000 followers on Instagram while posting pictures of women's bodies he worked on, most notably their butts, the broadcaster said. The Daily Mail said that Furtado is also a regular on Brazilian television.
Sky News said things changed when Lilian Quezia Calixto, 46, died after going through one of Furtado's procedures to enhance her buttocks at his exclusive Barra de Tijuca neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. The broadcaster said Calixto had traveled some 1,200 miles from Cuiaba, Brazil for the procedure that reportedly uses the controversial acrylic glass filler.
Calixto, a bank manager, began feeling ill after the injection on Saturday and was admitted to hospital with an accelerated heart rate, Sky News said. She suffered several heart attacks and died in the early hours of Sunday, the broadcaster said.
Furtado's assistant, who also is believed to be his girlfriend, was arrested but the doctor remained at large for murder and criminal association charges, Sky News said.
Calixto's husband, Osmar Jamberci, told Brazil's Extra newspaper, according to the Daily Mail, that she had told family and friends she was going to Rio to have the hormone implant, but didn't mention the butt enlargement procedure.
"She went on Saturday night and was due to return that night, it was going to be a quick thing," Jamberci said, per the Daily Mail. "She told the family that she was going to have an implant because of the menopause.
"At 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, this doctor called me telling me there had been a complication and that they needed someone to release her body. It was the only time I spoke to him, and after that he disappeared," Jamberci continued.
Along with the police, Rio de Janeiro's Regional Medical Council said they had opened an investigation into the incident on Tuesday, the Daily Mail reported.
