Protests are happening Pittsburgh after a police officer shot and killed an unarmed 17-year-old this week.
The shooting occurred Tuesday when Antwon Rose ran from a traffic stop while police were investigating an unrelated shooting.
Demonstrators staged a rally outside the East Pittsburgh Police station in support of Rose’s family, chanting, marching, and praying. They demanded an end to police brutality and violence, KDKA reported. The protestors also blocked intersections and stopped traffic for hours.
More protests are planned in front of the Alleghany County courthouse.
John Leach, who said he saw the shooting from his home, told KDKA the officer “shot that boy three times in the back while I was watching.” He added: “That boy was murdered. He had no gun. Nothing.”
The incident was caught on video by residents.
Rose died at the hospital after the shooting, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office. Its report did not mention how many times the teen was shot, but investigators say it was three times and that no one fired at the officer, Fox News reported.
Rose had worked for the wife of a candidate for lieutenant governor. The family’s attorney, D. Lee Merritt, stated “he was a generous, hard-working and highly promising student.”
Merritt said, “Rumors of him being involved in a separate shooting are unsubstantiated,” Merritt said, Fox News reported, adding that Rose was unarmed.
The officer, who was not named, had been sworn in to the police department about three hours before the shooting, according to Fox News.
County police are conducting an independent investigation and the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
