A Mesa, Arizona, police beating has led to four officers being put on leave after a video showed the recipient of the beating was unarmed.

In the video, four officers approach Robert Johnson, 33, in an apartment complex parking deck as he checks his phone. After talking to him, they grab him, one knees him in the gut, and others punch his head and body.

After cuffing Johnson, an officer shoves his head into the elevator door.

The incident took place May 23 and did not come to Police Chief Ramon Batista’a attention until a week later, NBC News reported.

“This in no way represents the whole work that is done everyday,” Batista said, NBC reported. “They’re human beings and certainly at first glance this looks like a mistake, it doesn’t look right.”

Batista said the department is investigating the incident.

The officers were there to respond to a domestic dispute, NBC reported. Johnson’s friend had reportedly tried to get into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, which led her to call police.

Johnson now faces disorderly conduct charges as a result of the interaction with police that included the beating, KPNX reported.

The officers placed on leave were not identified, and Batista didn’t specify whether other officers pictured were also being investigated, The Washington Post reported

Batista said force was used to make Johnson sit down when he refused to do so.

“I don’t feel that our officers were at their best. I don’t feel that this situation needed to go in the way that it went,” he said, The Washington Post reported.
