Phil Mickelson snapped arguably the most presidential Presidents Cup selfie in history this week when he managed to capture three former U.S. presidents in one shot.
Although there’s obviously room for improvement when in Mickelson’s photography skills, the photo featuring Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush was still good enough to viral on social media.
Phil Mickelson’s brother and caddie, Tim Mickelson, tweeted the photo while the U.S. and International teams were squaring off in the tournament at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey Thursday, USA Today noted.
CBS Sports said Clinton served as honorary chairman for the event in 2000, followed by Bush in 2005 and Obama, who served in 2009 and 2013.
President Donald Trump is this year's honorary chairman, but he has yet to make an appearance at the event, which concludes Oct. 1.
Given his penchant for golf, many were hoping Trump will show up over the weekend. Although event officials have said he had accepted an invitation to attend, everything was hearsay.
“His [Trump] people have been out and taken a good, hard look at the property and worked closely with our team,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said earlier in the week per Golf News Net. “We are thinking that he is going to come out but he has not yet confirmed, and we don’t know timing or all the underlying details."
The San Diego Union Tribune reported that Trump’s relationship with the PGA Tour has been somewhat strained after the World Golf Championship event was pulled from Trump-owned Doral following offensive comments made about Mexicans during his presidential campaign.
Combined with the controversy Trump triggered after lashing out at NFL players who kneel during the national anthem, the president's advisers may be steering him away from the Presidents Cup this year.
