A police officer died Friday after being shot in Locust Grove, Georgia, just south of Atlanta. Two deputies also were shot and wounded.
The shooter was killed in the incident, which happened around 10:30 a.m. while deputies were serving a warrant, WSB-TV reported.
One of the injured deputies was in fair condition and one was in serious condition and is undergoing surgery, the station said. Both were wearing bulletproof vests, but the deputy in serious condition was shot below the vest.
One of the deputies was Michael Corley, 49, whose brother told reporters that Corley asked for prayers and to see his kids, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Corley was shot in the chest when the bullet penetrated his bulletproof vest, his brother said.
Police blocked off the subdivision and were not letting those who don't live there enter. Locust Grove Elementary School, which was nearby, was put on lockdown during the response to the incident.
Neighbors told WSB-TV the shots sounded like firecrackers going off.
Twitter users expressed sadness and offered condolences to the fallen officer and well-wishes to the injured deputies.
