A suburban Dallas police officer was shot and killed after responding to a disturbance call late Wednesday in Richardson, Texas, where a second person also was killed.

The suspect barricaded himself for hours before surrendering early Thursday, police said.

The officer was shot in the neck and later died at a hospital in nearby Plano.

Police said the shooting sparked a standoff with the suspect, who randomly fired a weapon throughout the night. Witnesses said the man shouted "I'm sorry" as he was taken into custody hours later.

Police said the second person killed was 30-year-old Rene Gamez, who lived at the apartment where authorities cornered the suspect, according to Plano police spokesman David Tilley, who was fielding questions about the incident.

Tilley said the suspected gunman and Gamez knew each other but the extent of their relationship wasn't immediately clear. Police have not released the name of the officer.

The suspect's name also hasn't been released. But records at the Collin County jail show that a 26-year-old man was booked early Thursday on a charge of capital murder of a peace officer. Court records show the man has been arrested at least once before by Richardson police, in 2016 on a drug possession charge.

Late Wednesday, Richardson police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich said the suspected shooter surrendered after being cornered in an apartment. Police announced shortly after midnight that the second person shot had died.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott offered his condolences on Twitter.

"The hearts and soul of Texas mourn with you. Your loss is a loss to all law enforcement and everyone in our great state," the governor said.
