A Jack Nicklaus signature golf course opened Friday in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco and is already being heralded as the top golf course in the country.
Construction on the 18-hole course kicked off in 2014, and its opening ceremony was marked with the "Coupe du Trone/King's Trophy" tournament presented by the Moroccan Golf Federation.
Nicklaus explained in a statement that the site for the course "is one of the most scenic, beautiful vistas you will find for a golf experience."
He noted that the course was designed to feature balance and variety.
"You go from playing across open areas to playing around rock outcroppings to playing through wooded forests with mature trees, and then you end each nine of the course with spectacular, breath-taking views over the valleys," he said.
Senior Nicklaus Design Associate, Dirk Bouts, added that the "truly special course" raised the bar when it came to golf courses in the region.
The course was designed with Morocco's cold and wet winter months in mind in order to ensure extended play into the fall and allow for golf to start earlier in the spring.
Additionally, the five-star resort features a chalet style hotel with extended spa, fully-equipped fitness room, multi sports room, full service spa, swimming pool and tennis courts.
"The site in Ifrane for the Michlifen Golf & Country Club is one of the most scenic, beautiful vistas you will find for a golf experience," Nicklaus said in the statement. "My team and I are pleased to have worked alongside many great people throughout this design and proud that Michlifen represents our first Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in Morocco."
