Comedy Central television host Jon Stewart Tuesday assailed Newsweek magazine for its less-than-flattering cover photo of Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann that ran with the headline, “The Queen of Rage.”
Newsweek editor Tina Brown, meanwhile, is defending the cover.
Stewart said on “The Daily Show” that one has “to go pretty far” to find an unflattering picture of Bachmann, and ridiculed Brown’s assertion that the picture merely underlines the candidate’s “intensity” and that it is helping her campaign.
“That’s not an ‘I’m galvanizing the voters in Iowa’ picture,’” said Stewart. “You used that photo in a petty attempt to make Michele Bachmann look crazy.”
Joe Scarborough echoed this sentiment during an interview with Brown on MSNBC: “Be honest, you used that photo to make Michele Bachmann look crazy.”
Brown did not back down.
“She has this very kind of intense demeanor,” said Brown. “We picked a photo that captured her intensity.”
