New Hampshire Mulls Abortion Restrictions

New Hampshire, one of a few states that haven’t placed added restrictions on abortion since the Roe v. Wade decision, now has Republican supermajorities in both the state House and Senate, and they’re looking to change that, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported Sunday.

Lawmakers are considering a parental notification bill, which would require that parents be notified 48 hours before an abortion was to be performed on a daughter up to age 18. The law includes a medical exemption and a provision that allows young women to ask a court to bypass informing parents.

new, hampshire, abortionPilar Olivo, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice NH, said, "This is a very, very politicized issue, which is really a shame to put a young woman's safety in the center of such a politicized debate."

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Kathleen Souza, R-Manchester, said the bill is about the best interest of the child.

"Children are a gift from God, and it's a parent's God-given responsibility to take care of these kids, or the state can say they are negligent," she said. "We are born into a family and not handed over to the state to feed and clothe, at least not yet."

If the bill becomes law, New Hampshire would join the 43 other states that have parental notification or consent laws. The Senate is expected to act on the bill next month. The House passed it by a veto-proof majority.
