Nevada Mulls Gun Permit Privacy

Nevada state lawmakers moved Monday to make private the names of weapons permit holders, the Las Vegas Sun  reported Tuesday. State legislators held the first hearing on the issue Monday. They said access to the names of permit holders is a public safety issue for those who carry their weapons.

The proposed bill would negate a Nevada Supreme Court decision that made the names public after the Reno Gazette-Journal sued to have the records open.

The court decisions raised the ire of those who carry their weapons legally, and prompted the National Rifle Association to jump into the fight to strengthen the state’s confidentiality laws.

Conservative groups and permit holders spoke out at the hearing Monday in favor of the bill. Many of them said they are concerned about their safety.
The only group to oppose the proposed law was the Nevada Press Association.
