Nevada Shooter Parents May Be Charged if it Was Their Gun

The Nevada shooter's parents could be charged if authorities determine the handgun used in Monday's school shooting at Sparks Middle School was in fact taken from their home.

The 12-year-old seventh grade boy, who has yet to be identified, used a Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun to kill one teacher and wound two students at his school before taking his own life.

"The potential is there [for charges to be filed]," Sparks Police Department Deputy Chief Tom Miller told reporters, adding that the local prosecutor's office would be responsible for eventually determining whether or not the shooters parents would be charged, ABC News reported.

It is still unclear what caused the 12-year-old to bring the gun to the school and begin opening fire, though at least one student who knew the boy told ABC news that he was picked on by some of his peers.

"I saw kids pushing him around and doing a lot of mean things to him," the student said.

"I guess one day he got tripped and my friends said, 'Trip them back," she added. "But I guess he just decided just to shoot them."

It has yet to be determined whether or not the shooter targeted his victims during the rampage or shot indiscriminately.

"As you can imagine, the best description is chaos," Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson said at a news conference. "It's too early to say whether he was targeting people or going on an indiscriminate shooting spree."

One fact that has been determined say witnesses is that 45-year-old 8th grade math teacher, a former Marine named Michael Landsberry, acted heroically during the school shooting when he attempted to save the lives of his students and in the process sacrifice his own life.

"In my estimation is he's a hero," Reno's Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson told reporters; while Washoe County School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez referred to Landsberry as a "fallen hero, an amazing teacher."

Landsberry, who served two tours in Afghanistan, was said to have rushed at the shooter in an attempt to shield several students, at which time witnesses say he was told to back up by the armed seventh grader before being shot in the chest, ABC News reported.

The two students who were injured in the school shooting are reportedly recovering from their wounds, with one having to undergo surgery after being shot.
