Republican Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval wants to use any extra money the state brings in as the economy picks up on education and social services — even as he continues to cut spending.
Sales taxes are coming in higher than anticipated, so the governor wants to put more money to schools, universities, and other programs to supplement his $5.8 billion, two-year budget, the
Las Vegas Review Journal reported Monday.
The governor’s administration may receive an extra $100 million from sales tax revenue from mining, entertainment and gaming as casino receipts improve. The governor also may put some of the extra money into reserved funds. Administration officials are waiting for a May 2 revenue report from the Nevada Economic Forum to know an exact number.
Sandoval and the Republican-controlled Legislature have stuck to their pledges of not raising taxes. Democrats have been talking about ways to increase revenue through new taxes, but their plan appears to have no chance of passage.
