Netflix has canceled its Emmy award-winning series “GLOW" due to the coronavirus. The show was weeks into filming its fourth and final season when the pandemic hit, forcing the streaming service to shut down production for an indefinite period of time. Now show creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch have revealed that Netflix has pulled the plug on "GLOW."

"COVID has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show," they said in a statement to Fox News. "Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW. We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone.”

The show was nominated for 15 Emmy awards and won three.

"GLOW" follows the personal and professional lives of a group of women who perform for a wrestling organization in Los Angeles during the 1980s. The show starred Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and Marc Maron.

"There’s a lot of sh--ty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now," Flahive and Mensch added. "But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again."

Sources told Fox News that the show's cancellation came down to budget, which had to be slashed following the outbreak of the coronavirus. "GLOW" would be too expensive to continue, as the fourth season would not air for at least two years. By then, audience sizes could decrease dramatically. That, combined with the risk of spreading COVID-19, meant it made more sense to pull the plug on the series.

Netflix said in a statement that "shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast" would be "especially challenging" considering the cast were required to make physical contact to play out wrestling scenes.

"We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world," the streaming giant added.
