Daniels Close to a Decision on Presidential Run

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is just about done mulling a decision to jump into the GOP presidential nomination race. His decision is near, the Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

"I'm not going to take much longer," Daniels told the newspaper.
Daniels said his family has now had "a lot of time to marinate" the issue. They’re now entering the final stages of the decision-making process, which some have criticized.

"I wish people would figure out we're not BS'ing them," Daniels said, declining to say whether he was leaning toward or against a run.

Daniels, clearly thinking about what it would take to win the race, talked about running a national campaign.

"Campaigning in a retail way, they tell me, is useful in early states like Iowa and New Hampshire," he said. "And we certainly know how to do that."
But he said a campaign full of midday trips to county fairs and unannounced stops wouldn't work on the national level.

"I know at some point the retail approach might not be practical," he said, pointing to the need to hold huge rallies in the heat of a campaign.
One thing is for sure: He couldn’t use RV to travel, an approach that has served him well in Indiana.

"I don't know how you'd get it from New Hampshire to South Carolina when you have events on consecutive days," said.
