NBC Bay Area reported that a Union City resident outside of San Francisco also purchased a ticket with 5 matching numbers but not the Mega number. The ticket netted the winner $233,651. It was purchased at Island Pacific Supermarket located at 4122 Dyer St.
Both contestants have the standard 180 days to claim their prizes.
As is standard for the location that sells the winning ticket, in this case 10389 Santa Monica Boulevard in Century City, the gas station was presented with a banner reading "Millionaire Made Here."
Speaking with reporters from CBS, employee Rashid Chowdry said he hopes the winner shares the wealth when claiming the prize.
"Every single person that comes in and buys a ticket is like, 'If you sold me the winning ticket I’m going to hook you up,' and do this, do that," he said with a laugh. "I’m like 'Okay, yeah, we’ve heard this a million times,' but you never expect anybody to go through with it. But, hey, who knows?"
The Mega Millions game is played in 43 states, Washington D.C., as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands. Odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 258,890,850. Roughly 1 in 14 win a prize of some sort.
A ticket with all six matching numbers was sold just three drawings before the most recent.
The big win comes just a few months after the
amazing story of Marvin Rosales-Martinez, who found a winning $1 million scratch-off lottery ticket hidden beneath a damp pile of leaves while landscaping on Long Island following Hurricane Sandy.
