The creator of mayonnaise-flavored ice cream says people like it once they try it, but if reaction on social media is any indication, getting them to even try that first taste is going to be a challenge.
Kyle Gentleman, the proprietor of Scotland’s Ice Artisan Ice Cream shop, said his “love of mayo” prompted him to come up with the new flavor, The Independent reported.
His recipe for the confection is simple and direct: He simply mixes mayonnaise (Hellman’s) with ice cream.
“People actually enjoy it once they try it,” Gentleman told The Independent. “Surprisingly it actually works as an ice cream — creamy and smooth.”
The basic ingredients for mayonnaise are egg yolks, salt, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and vegetable oil.
This isn’t the first time the Ice Artisan Ice Cream shop has introduced a strange flavor. Its website leads with “Monster Energy” ice cream, and Food and Wine reported that in the past the shop offered customers Strongbow Dark Fruit Hard Cider ice cream.
And it was the cider that led Gentleman to try mayo.
“I tried to think of another idea but one that is polar opposite from cider — mayo does just that!” he told The Independent.
People on social media weren’t buying into mayonnaise ice cream.
