Listeria concerns have prompted an ice cream recall for store brand ice cream bars from more than 30 store chains throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
The orange cream and chocolate-coated ice cream bars were made at Fieldbrook Foods on a single line at its Dunkirk, New York, plant and distributed to more than 30 retail chains including Aldi, Dollar Tree, Kroger, Safeway, and Giant, the Miami Herald reported.
Listeria was discovered in a batch of orange cream bars that never made it to market and the larger recall was prompted, the Herald reported.
“There is no evidence of any contamination prior to October 30, 2017, but the company has issued the recall back to January 1, 2017, through an abundance of caution and in full cooperation with the FDA,” the recall says.
The ice cream bars have best-by dates between Jan. 1 and Dec, 31, 2018.
No illnesses have been reported in conjunction with the recalled items.
Those who have purchased the recalled products can return them to the store for a full refund.
According to the FDA notice, listeria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and can be fatal in young children, the elderly, and others with weak immune systems. Listeria also can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
