A new “Little Women” adaptation from “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig is reportedly assembling a star-studded cast including Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, who starred in Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated directing debut.
Other stars in talks to appear in the Sony vehicle include Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, and Florence Pugh, according to Variety. Gerwig was previously a writer for the movie, but was tapped to direct after the success of “Lady Bird.”
The classic novel by Louisa May Alcott details the lives of four sisters during and after the Civil War and has been beloved by generations.
If the big names mentioned end up coming on board officially, production is expected to be fast-tracked for 2019, Variety reported. Streep is finishing Season 2 of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” while Stone was looking for her next role after production wrapped on award contender “The Favourite” and Ronan just finished shooting “Mary Queen of Scots.”
Chalamet just started production for Netflix original “The King,” Variety reported.
A previous adaptation in 1994 starred Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Susan Sarandon and Kirsten Dunst. The BBC also featured a miniseries based on the novel last year.
While some Twitter users were over yet another "Little Women" adaptation, many seemed pretty excited about one from Gerwig with the rumored cast.
