Los Angeles shelter system animals got Christmas treats early last week with the help of some volunteers as part of the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation third annual Hope for the Holidays shelter feeding, People magazine reported.

More than 1,000 dogs and cats in the L.A. Animal Services Shelter system received the freshly cooked meal of organic rice, beef and peas, turkey and lentils, and turkey and peas from Dec. 12-17, People noted.

The foundation also changed the animals' bedding and gave them blankets for the winter, the magazine said.

"This is our third year doing the shelter feeding," foundation founder and animal activist Marc Ching told People. "Our foundation is based mostly on fighting against animal cruelty and abuse, but we try and always give back to the community."

The foundation posted a video on its Facebook page.

"While it was hard being there, it is the compassion that is seen that makes it worth it,"' the foundation said on Facebook. "There are so many beautiful animals in the shelter. And while some people think of it as a sad place, the staff and volunteers that come here every day - they doing amazing work."

The foundation has been involved with fighting against the dog meat trade in Asia and helped create House Resolution 1406, introduced last March by U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, of Florida, the organization said on its website.

The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act would amend the animal welfare act to prohibit the slaughter of dogs and cats for human consumption, the foundation said. The group said there is no specific protection for animals in regards on the meat trade in 44 states.

"We want the message to be sent worldwide that human consumption of dog and cat meat is unacceptable everywhere, not only in Asia and that is ultimately, if the bill passes, against the law in the United States," Ching said on the website.
