A shelter is sorting rescued dogs by Hogwarts houses so that people can focus on the dogs personalities instead of their breeds. It seems to be working.

Staff at the Pet Alliance Orlando in Florida settled on the “Harry Potter” inspired initiative because, like in the books, they felt the characteristics of their dogs could be matched to either the Gryffindors, Slytherins, Hufflepuffs or Ravenclaws, The Dodo reported.

Stephen Bardy, executive director at the shelter, told The Dodo he was chatting with other staff members about “how to get people to focus less on breed and more on personality when they came up with the genius idea to start sorting dogs into Hogwarts houses.”

Bardy explained that their animal behaviorist developed an intricate way to determine which house each dog belonged in.

“The dogs are tested individually similar to the Sorting Hat process in the novels. In our case, the dog’s choice of toy indicates his house, not the Sorting Hat — but we do have one on hand,” he said.

Once the animals have been sorted, Yahoo News noted, they are given their respective colors as well as special charts containing their details for potential adopters to view.

The initiative is proving to be a success, with an increase in traffic being directed to the shelter, which ABC News reported, gets about 1,800 pets per year that are most often surrendered by owners.

Bardy told the news channel that he wanted to “figure out a way to end pet homelessness,” adding that it all came down to “understanding dogs’ behavior and personalities and being a responsible pet owner.”

The campaign may be the first step in realizing this.

ABC noted that, in the past few days, 23 dogs had been adopted from the "Harry Potter"-themed houses.

“The idea has created a lot of buzz and definitely an increase in walk-in traffic,” Bardy said, per the Dodo. “We only implemented it a couple weeks ago but we are trending higher on adoptions over this time last year.”
