Kate Spade's "heartbroken" father died the night before his daughter's funeral, her family revealed.
The news was confirmed in a statement issued to The Kansas City Star on Thursday, as friends and family were gathering in Kansas City to mourn the death of the iconic fashion designer, who took her own life two weeks earlier.
A family spokesperson noted that 89-year-old Earl Brosnahan Jr. Had "been in failing health of late and was heartbroken over the recent death of his beloved daughter."
The statement added that, at the time of his death, Brosnahan was at home and surrounded by family.
According to the statement, Brosnahan married his first wife, June Therese Mullen, in 1953 and had six children, Missy, Earl III, Ann, Reta, Katy (deceased), and Eve. He married his second wife, Sandy Palmer, in 1992 and "she was bedside when he passed."
Brosnahan is survived by Sandy, his three brothers and a sister, five children, eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kate Spade's body was discovered inside her New York City apartment by housekeeping staff on June 6. A scarf reportedly was found around her neck and tied to a door knob.
Her husband, Andy Spade, said that she had suffered from depression and anxiety for many years.
The funeral was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Redemptorist Church in Kansas City, which is where her grandparents wed.
Page Six reported seeing dozens off friends and family members at the mass, including Kate Spade's husband and his brother, David Spade, as well as Kate Spade's niece Rachel Brosnahan, who starred in "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."
In lieu of flowers, Kate Spade's family asked for donations to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or a Kansas City animal shelter.
