Kanye West continues to defend his support for President Trump in an interview with The New York Times published Monday.
The rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and fashion designer is standing firm on backing the president as a person and through certain issues.
“I hear Trump talk and I’m like, I like the way it sounds; knowing that there’s people who like me that don’t like the way it sounds,” he told the NYT.
He added: “I don’t agree with all of his policies.”
West's wife, reality star Kim Kardashian, had asked him to announce his disagreement with some of Trump’s policies. West stated he has a cousin in jail for doing something wrong, but he still loves him.
“I don’t base my love for a person on if they doing something good or bad,” he told the Times.
West confused many fans while delighting Trump supporters when he declared his support for the president on Twitter, even showing a “Make America Great Again” hat signed by Trump. He tweeted he felt he and Trump had “dragon energy.”
Some musicians not only disagreed with West's stance but have encouraged him to reconsider his opinions.
“I felt that I knew people who voted for Trump that were celebrities that were scared to say that they liked him,” he told the NYT. West said some celebrities told him that. “I’m not scared to say what I like. Let me come over here and get in this fight with you.”
West caused controversy a few months ago when he remarked to TMZ about 400 years of slavery sounding “like a choice.” West told the Times he was misunderstood but that he found the reaction “awesome.”
"I said the idea of sitting in something for 400 years sounds — sounds — like a choice to me, I never said it’s a choice. I never said slavery itself — like being shackled in chains — was a choice," he told the Times.
West noted that he doesn’t feel pressure to speak for a group of people and that he often takes unpopular positions.
“When I was in high school, most of my opinions were, like, only me and a couple people who thought like me,” he told the NYT.
