Kadiza Sultana, a U.K. schoolgirl who joined ISIS as a "jihadi bride," reportedly died in an air strike, her family's lawyer said this week.

Lawyer Tasnime Akunjee told the BBC that the family heard a report of her death in Syria a few weeks ago but have been unable to independently verify the report.

Kadiza Sultana was 16 when she left with friends Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, both 15 at the time, after telling their parents they were going out for the day, the BBC said. They were described as straight-A students at Bethnal Green Academy in London.

Akunjee said Kadiza had expressed a desire to return to the U.K. but feared brutal punishment by ISIS if she were caught.

"In the week where she was thinking of these issues a young Austrian girl had been caught trying to leave ISIS territory and was by all reports beaten to death publicly, so — given that that was circulated in the region as well as outside — I think Kadiza took that as a bad omen and decided not to take the risk," Akunjee told BBC.

ITV News reported that Kadiza told her sister via phone that the man she married was killed and she wanted to return home but was scared.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the residential building she was staying in was hit by an air strike in May.

"You would move heaven and earth to get any child back from a danger zone, and this family had done all they could and stretched every sinew to get their daughter, their sibling back home," Akunjee told ITV News. "But there is always the situation when you have a person in a warzone that the worst could happen, and unfortunately it just wasn't possible to have her home before the risk caught up with her."

Kadiza is thought to be the first British female member of ISIS to die, the Daily Mail reported.
