Josh Duggar has been granted release as he awaits trial on charges of downloading and possessing child pornography, but there is a list of conditions that he needs to abide by.

The former reality TV star was arrested and charged last week. Prosecutors said Duggar possessed the material, some of which depicts the sexual abuse of children under the age of 12, in May 2019.

Duggar has pleaded not guilty and his attorneys argued in a motion opposing pretrial detention that the charges arose from "alleged conduct involving a desktop at a business Duggar previously owned and operated," according to NBC News. They added that, when investigators arrived unannounced in November 2019 "to execute a search of the business and to seize, inter alia, computers and electronic devices, Duggar fully complied with all law enforcement directives."

On Wednesday, a federal judge granted Duggar's release during a detention hearing held over Zoom but stated that Duggar was banned from speaking to his children without his wife's supervision. He was also forbidden from using electronic devices and instructed to live in a residence that does not have any children.

"It’s not the average defendant who can operate in the black web and partition their computer and bypass sophisticated monitoring devices," U.S. District Judge Christy Comstock said to Duggar. "The evidence that the court has heard today is significant, and frankly, the victims of your crime — if you committed it — concern the court."

Duggar starred on TLC’s "19 Kids and Counting" for several years, but the show was pulled from the network in 2015 after accusations emerged that he had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter. He was never charged but admitted he had acted  "inexcusably."

Duggar's family has spoken out about his arrest in recent days.

His sister, Jinger Vuolo, said she was "disturbed" by his child pornography charges.

"While this case must go through the legal system, we want to make it clear that we absolutely condemn any form of child abuse and fully support the authorities and judicial process in their pursuit of justice," she and husband Jeremy wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.

Duggar's cousin, Amy King, meanwhile said she was "devastated" by the charges.

"I’m kind of speechless, we just hope it’s not true,” she told The Sun. "I spoke with several of my cousins after we heard about the arrest. We’re in shock, but we don’t want to think the worst of someone, you want to think the best," she told The Sun. "If it is true it would absolutely devastate a lot of people."

In a statement, the Duggar family thanked the public for their support and prayers and noted that the charges against Duggar were serious.

"It is our prayer that the truth, no matter what it is, will come to light, and that this will all be resolved in a timely manner," the statement read. "We love Josh and Anna and continue to pray for their family."
