Jordan Peele is reexamining Lorena Bobbitt in a docuseries for an original Amazon Prime series, looking at the case through the lens of domestic and sexual assault, Amazon said in a statement Thursday.
Peele, who won an Academy Award last month for best original screenplay for his movie "Get Out," is the executive producer with his company Monkeypaw, Amazon said. Sonar Entertainment is also a producer of the four-part series that will be directed by documentary filmmaker Joshua Rofe.
In 1993, the scandal became a media sensation when Lorena Bobbitt, a young wife in Virginia, cut off her husband's penis after she claimed that he raped her and she endured long-term physical and emotional abuse, according to the Daily Mail. John Wayne Bobbitt would be acquitted of the alleged attack against his wife, but the Lorena's reaction to it has long remained etched in people's minds, the Daily Mail wrote.
"When we hear the name 'Bobbitt' we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full-blown media spectacle," Peele said in the statement released by Amazon. "With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena's story and we're honored to help her tell it."
The Daily Mail noted that Lorena Bobbitt was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity with jurors agreeing that she was provoked into her actions by an allegedly abusive husband. The couple divorced the following year, according to the publication.
"It was a crime," Lorena Bobbitt, who lives in Gainesville, Virginia, told WRC-TV in 2014. "It was done but it was not done on purpose. It's sad because domestic violence put me and my ex-husband in the hospital."
Amazon wrote that many of people's initial perception of Bobbitt may be off base.
"Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project," Heather Schuster, head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals said in the Amazon statement.
"'Lorena' reframes Lorena Bobbitt's story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong," Schuster continued.
