Sen. Barrasso: Medicare is Broken

Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., defends the House GOP’s budget plan to replace Medicare with a system of vouchers, calling the Medicare system “broken,” Politico reports. “Doctors right now are running away from Medicare,” Barrasso said on CNN’s "State of the Union.”

“Many many doctors — 57 percent of doctors — don’t want new Medicare patients, because the system we have right now is broken, it's unsustainable,” said Barrasso, himself a physician.

"As somebody who has taken care of Medicare patients, we can make it a lot better," Barrasso said. "People want choices — and right now they don't have that with Medicare.”

Republican members of Congress have faced tough questions about House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s plan at town halls across the country.
