John Mahoney, best known as cranky father Martin Crane on "Frasier" for 11 seasons, died Sunday at age 77, his manager said.
Mahoney was in hospice care in Chicago, Reuters reported.
Mahoney played the father of Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce's characters during the show's run, which lasted from 1993 to 2004. He won a SAG Award for his role, and received two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nods for his portrayal.
In more recent years, he had landed a recurring role on "Hot in Cleveland," which he appeared on from 2011 to 2014 as Roy, the love interest of Betty White's character Elka.
Mahoney had worked in film for more than 35 years, appearing in classics "The American President" and "Say Anything," along with voicing animated characters in the "Atlantis" films.
Twitter users mourned Mahoney's passing.
