Joe Buck of Fox Sports was a stroke behind on golfer Brooks Koepka's love life this weekend, when the announcer misidentified Koepka's girlfriend as his ex-girlfriend following a post tournament kiss captured onscreen.
The incident took place when Koepka clinched the U.S Open title at Erin Hills over the weekend.
Having bagged his first major career title, the athlete walked off the 18th hole and straight to girlfriend, Jena Sims for a celebratory kiss. Buck accidentally referred to Sims as Koepka's former partner, Becky Edwards, USA Today reported.
Adding to the awkward moment, Buck went on to describe Edwards as an All-American soccer player at Florida State, unaware that Koepka was no longer dating Edwards and had a different girlfriend with him.
Deadline posted the mistake on Twitter.
Fox Sports analyst Brad Faxon noted the error and correctly identified Jena Sims, interjecting "Joe, that’s actually his new girlfriend. That’s Jena Sims," The Washington Post noted.
But the blunder had already attracted widespread attention.
It was not long before critics took to social media, expressing their views and, while most found humor in the mistake, others were up-in-arms.
Jenna Sims did not comment on the mishap but she did share a photo of herself and Koepka shortly after he won the U.S Title.
Sims, the 2007 Miss Georgia Teen USA, has appeared in movies including "3-Headed Shark Attack," Golf Digest noted. She leads a nonprofit called Pageant of Hope that hosts beauty pageants for girls with special needs.
