Former Vice President Joe Biden launched an LGBTQ initiative Tuesday aimed at family acceptance of youth, using his foundation to promote the effort, titled “As You Are.”
The first action of the initiative is a video campaign featuring Biden along with former NFL player Wade Davis, pop singer Cyndi Lauper, and many other LGBTQ activists, CBS News reported.
“We’ll use our resources to highlight the harms of family rejection and lift up research, best practices and personal stories to show the importance of family acceptance,” Biden said in the video, CBS reported.
LGBT youth “continue to be among the most at-risk youth populations in America,” the Biden foundation said, The Hill reported, noting that they are more likely to be homeless, depressed and suicidal than non-LGBTQ youth.
Biden said publicly in 2012 that he supported same-sex marriage, The Hill reported. He has also said that transgender equality is the “civil rights issue of our time.”
The “As You Are” campaign wants to use personal stories to “change the culture and ensure a bright future for the LGBTQ young people of America,” The Hill reported.
Biden also tweeted that “LGBTQ young people should never have to face rejection from those who love them” and invited people to share their stories with the foundation as part of the campaign.
