J.J. Watt visited the Santa Fe shooting survivors who are recovering from their injuries in the hospital and at home Monday, days after offering to pay for the funerals of the 10 victims — eight students and two teachers — killed in the Friday school shooting.
The Houston Texans defensive end took photos with the survivors and with nurses who have been working to take care of those injured in the shooting at Texas' Santa Fe High School last Friday, ABC 13 reported.
One of the students Watt visited was Clay Horn, who was shot twice by the gunman and hopes to return to pole vaulting after he recovers from his injuries, ABC reported.
Another student Watt visited was 16-year-old Sarah Salazar, whose mother posted on Facebook that Sarah was the only one left alive in the room where the shooting took place.
Salazar had a broken jaw and needs a shoulder replacement, but had a breathing tube taken out Monday just before Watt visited her, according to a GoFundMe page.
Her friend tweeted that Salazar had a “huge smile” on her face after the visit.
In addition to the 10 people who were killed, 10 more were injured in the shooting, which took place in an art classroom.
Watt raised more than $37 million last year for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, which earned him the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in February.
Twitter users praised Watt’s efforts to help his fellow Texans in their time of need.
