Majority of Voters Don't Agree With Birthright Citizenship

A new national survey found that the majority of likely voters believe a child born to illegal immigrant parents should not be automatically granted U.S. citizenship.

The new Rasmussen Reports poll found that 61 percent of voters don’t support birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants. That’s the highest level of support for changing the existing law, which says anyone born in the country regardless of their parents’ immigration status is a citizen, since Rasmussen started asking the question five years ago.

The number of those polled who disagree with banning birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants is down to 28 percent, six points lower than it was in August. Just 1 in 10, or 11 percent, of those polled are undecided.

The vast majority, or 84 percent, believes that before anyone receives local, state, or federal government services, they should be required to prove they’re in the country legally.

Rasmussen Reports conducted the survey of 1,000 likely voters between April 17-18, and it has a 3 percent margin of error.
