Idris Elba will star in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" for Netflix, which will also be directed and produced by the Golden Globe winner under his Green Door production company, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo that centers on the romance between the hunchback Quasimodo and the Gypsy Esmeralda, the Netflix retelling is described as a "sonic and musical experience" that will include original music produced by Elba, The Hollywood Reporter said.
The currently unnamed project will be written by Michael Mitnick, with producers including Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones for Automatik, and Elba and Ana Garantino for Green Door, The Wrap reported.
Netflix announced last month that Elba would star in "Turn up Charlie," a comedy about a struggling DJ who becomes a male nanny to his best friend's daughter. Elba's recent roles have included "Molly’s Game," "Yardie," "The Mountain Between Us" and "Avengers: Infinity War."
"Yardie" was the first feature Elba directed, according to Deadline.
Last month, Netflix announced that it sold $1.9 billion of senior bonds to raise money for general corporate purposes, which may include adding content, production and development, and acquisitions.
News of the streaming service's latest project drew reactions on Twitter.
