A 7-year-old Los Angeles boy died after being hit by an ice cream truck Wednesday, and a group of people attacked the truck’s driver after the incident.

Police told CBS Los Angeles the child was riding an electronic bicycle, and apparently trying to ride alongside the ice cream truck when he fell off and rolled under the truck’s back wheels.

The Associated Press identified the boy as Jamarion Thomas.

“I walked outside. He was lying on the ground bleeding, so I just tried to comfort the family ’cause they was screaming,” Linda Black told CBS. “It’s really sad because I have a kid that is younger than he is.”

“He’s well-loved around here. He play with all the kids. He play with my grandson,” Jackie Johnson, a neighbor, told the station.

After the accident, a group of people threw bricks at the truck, smashed the windshield, and gave minor injuries to the driver, police told CBS.

Currently, no charges or arrests have been made in the incident.

Comments under the AP story got heated as some questioned whether the boy should have been riding a motorized bike on public streets.

The boy’s family told the The Los Angeles Times that stories Thomas was holding onto the ice cream truck while riding his bike were not true because he was too small to do so. His mother told the Times that she was getting money for ice cream, and when she saw her son last he was pushing the bike, not riding.

The Times said the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
