Rodham: Hillary Clinton Biopic Screenplay Circulates Through Hollywood

By    |   Thursday, 03 January 2013 07:06 PM EST

A hot new political screenplay in the form a Hillary Clinton biopic is making its way around Hollywood.

The script, penned by Young Il Kim, a 39-year-old writing newcomer from South Korea, recently came in at No. 4 on Hollywood's "Black List," a yearly poll of the most desirable screenplay picks of 300 film executives.

Films produced from scripts that previously made the list include "The King's Speech," "The Social Network," and "Juno."

Kim is being represented by Hollywood power player United Talent Agency.

The script's plot revolves around a 20-something-year-old Hillary Rodham as she deals with a budding career and a boyfriend named Bill Clinton. Her job is as an attorney on the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, which is seeking to impeach President Richard Nixon.

"There's this incredible irony that she worked on the impeachment process that was used against her husband," Kim told Politico.

"But it's also really a journey of a woman who was torn between her personal desires and her professional ambition — both literally pulled her thousands of miles apart, because Bill did not want to leave Arkansas, and she did not want to leave Washington, D.C.," the writer said.

A Hillary biopic has been a hot topic of prior discussion in Hollywood. Bill Clinton indicated last year that he would like to see Meryl Streep portray his wife on the big screen.

Kim had a former career in Internet technology, but after witnessing the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, he decided to seek a new direction as a screenwriter. He earned his master's degree in screenwriting from the University of Southern California in 2004, relocated to New Jersey, and tutored part-time as he wrote screenplay drafts.

He said he got the idea after he saw a photograph of Hillary Clinton with President Barack Obama and others in the Situation Room, as the group watched the raid that culminated in the capturing and killing of Osama bin Laden.

Seeing the photo triggered the memory of another pic Kim had seen when he was working at the Harvard student newspaper in 1992 and Bill Clinton was running for president.

"There was this photo of Hillary when she was in her 20s with coke-bottle glasses and long, hippie hair," Kim said. "And it was those two images that really made me realize that this would be a great way into this story just to focus on a moment in her life when she's in her 20s, and she doesn't know what she wants to do with her life."

The working title for the future film is "Rodham."
