A Friday afternoon knife attack at a Hamburg, Germany, supermarket has left one person dead and six injured.
One suspect was arrested in the attack at an Edeka supermarket on the outskirts of Hamburg. Witnesses said the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) during the attack, Business Insider reported.
No motive was given for the attack, which is still being investigated.
The attacker entered the market with a kitchen knife and began to stab customers, CNN reported. He then fled the scene and stabbed several pedestrians as he was pursued by witnesses, who managed to restrain him until police got to the scene.
The victim who died at the scene of the attack is believed to be a 50-year-old German woman, but has not yet been named, ABC News reported. Five others, four men and one woman, were wounded as the suspect tried to flee the scene, and a sixth man was injured as he attempted to overpower the suspect.
Some of the wounded were injured seriously and were taken to area hospitals, ABC reported. The suspect, a 26-year-old originally from the United Arab Emirates, was slightly wounded when he was overpowered.
Officials initially said the suspect was a thief trying to run, but police have not confirmed robbery as part of a motive, ABC reported.
