A 10-year-old girl drowned in the swimming pool aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship on Sunday afternoon, but authorities have not released details about what led to the death.
According to The Associated Press, Petty Officer 2nd Class Nate Littlejohn said the ship, the Norwegian Gem, was roughly 75 miles off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when the incident occurred.
After the death, the ship headed straight to Port Canaveral, Florida. It arrived Monday afternoon, and a Norwegian representative gave a statement after it arrived.
"On Sunday afternoon, the ship's medical team responded to an emergency call from the pool deck, as a 10-year-old female guest was reported unresponsive. The team quickly administered CPR and full emergency care. After extensive efforts, the guest could not be revived," the statement said.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family during this very difficult time. Norwegian's care team is providing full assistance and support to the family."
The rep, Vanessa Picariello, said that the Gem left New York on Saturday, and was scheduled to visit the Bahamas.
