Dad Who Drowned Sons Gets Death Sentence in Texas

Naim Rasool Muhammad was sentenced to death on Thursday for his 2011 conviction for drowning his two sons, 5-year-old Naim and 3-year-old Elijah, in a Dallas-area creek.

The jury took only 10 minutes to find the North Texas man guilty of the capital murder the prior week and just three hours to sentence Muhammad to death.

"I apologize for bringing any pain and hurt on anybody for the actions that I have caused to you all," Muhammad said following the announcement of his sentence.

Muhammad went on to tell the court that his reason for killing his sons stemmed from his desire to be a father and the belief that it was being taken from him, local affiliate NBCDFW reported.

At the time of the double murder, his wife Kametra Sampson, who was also the children's mother, was residing with her kids in a shelter after reports of family violence surfaced earlier in the year.

Sampson had been seeing another man when the murder occurred, prosecutors say.
Muhammad had reportedly used the threat of violence to force the mother and their two sons into his car as they walked to school, before taking them to the creek and killing the two young boys.

Muhammad also attempted to pick up his youngest child, a 1-year-old, hours before killing his two sons, but was unsuccessful say authorities.

Muhammad confessed to the murders during an interview with investigators.

In the taped confession, the murderous father said he told his sons to pretend they were swimming at which time he held them under water until they were unresponsive.

The tape was played in court, causing the defendant to reportedly cry so loudly that his wailing could be heard throughout the halls of the courthouse, NBCDFW reported.

In addition to the heinous act he perpetrated on his two boys, Muhammad had a history of violence, having routinely beaten Sampson, court records reveal.

Muhammad had reportedly assaulted his wife once for something as minor as burning his rice.

"You've shown that you have no boundaries, that nothing is sacred to you -- not even the bond between a father and son," Sampson told Muhammad following the verdict's announcement.

Having received a report of family violence, Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) confirmed that they were monitoring the family since early 2011.

In their closing arguments, prosecutor Tammy Kemp referred to Muhammad as "a monster" and "100 percent pure evil."

Defense attorney Paul Johnson disputed the evil characterization, telling jurors that his client "is not evil, but he has committed an evil act."

The defense reportedly attempted to attribute Muhammad's violence on his upbringing by his mother who was a crack-addicted prostitute.

In addition to the violence he displayed against his family, Muhammad also reportedly had a criminal record that spanned 20 years, prosecutors say.
