Despite all the hubbub about former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s first week as an official Republican presidential candidate, three Georgia governors plan to back him and have joined his campaign. Current Gov. Nathan Deal is among them, ABC News reported Wednesday.

gingrich, endorsement, georgia, governorsGingrich announced Tuesday that Deal will act as chairman of his campaign in Georgia. Former Govs. Sonny Perdue and Zell Miller, who also served as a U.S. senator, will serve as national chairman of Gingrich’s campaign.

“I’m proud to have three very important Georgians helping lead our campaign,” Gingrich said. “Sonny, Zell and Nathan are good friends and have always provided good counsel. They will be very important voices as we talk to the American people about the right policies we need to win the future."

Perdue served as governor from 2003 to 2010.

"America, at this critical juncture, needs a leader who has the discernment and understanding of where America needs to go, and the courage and leadership to implement that vision,” he said. “Newt Gingrich has what it takes to do both."

Miller, a Democrat, denounced John Kerry when he the Democratic presidential nominee at the 2004 Republican National Convention and he supported George W. Bush’s re-election campaign.

“Newt is a leader,” Miller said. “Newt’s election as president is critical to the future of our country. We need a leader who has proven they can make big things happen. You don’t do big things by being a wall flower.”
