Stuart Damon, best known for his role as Dr. Alan Quartermaine in "General Hospital," has died at 84 after a battle with renal failure.
The show's executive producer, Frank Valentini, confirmed the actor passed away on Tuesday.
"Stuart Damon played beloved patriarch Alan Quartermaine for 30 years," he said in a statement to USA Today. "He was a great actor and even greater man. His legacy lives on through ‘GH’ and all the lives he touched and all those who loved him. He will be missed."
Born in New York on Feb. 5, 1937, Damon began his career in theater. He worked on Broadway, where he gained widespread attention after appearing as the prince in a 1965 musical production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s "Cinderella," and also performed in productions on London's West End. In 1968 he landed the role as a secret agent in the TV series "The Champions," which aired until 1969. He also made appearances in various British shows including "The Saint," "Steptoe and Son" and "The New Avengers."
Then, in 1977, he was cast in his most memorable role - as Dr. Quartermaine on "General Hospital."
For three decades he played the character, who was killed off in 2007 after suffering a massive heart attack. The role earned him an Emmy for best supporting actor, as well as several nominations. Damon also played Dr. Quartermaine in the show's spinoff series, "Port Charles," from 1999 to 2001.
Upon hearing of his death, "General Hospital" stars flooded social media with tributes to Damon.
"I am so grateful to have had this wonderful man in my life. I am very sad today #StuartDamon #GH," tweeted Genie Francis, who played Laura Spencer in the series.
"Broken hearted to hear of the passing of Stuart Damon. He played my adopted dad on General Hospital for 7 years and he was the most kind, wonderful, loving, supportive person," posted Amber Tamblyn, who played Damon's adopted daughter on "General Hospital." "He always made me laugh and made me feel safe on set. I love you, Stewy. Rest well now, my friend."
"What a lovely, funny, talented Prince of a man," "General Hospital" actress Nancy Lee Grahn said on Twitter. "He truly was Charming. What a pleasure it was to work with his iconic self. Condolences to his family. RIP Stuie. #StuartDamon," she wrote.
"He makes me proud and thankful to be even a small part of this show. #GH #GHFamily," added Eden McCoy, who played Josslyn John Jacks on the soap opera.
