Fantasia Barrino is speaking openly about her struggle to become pregnant. The "American Idol" alum and husband Kendall Taylor are expecting their first child together but it took them years to conceive. Barrino opened up about her fertility issues during an appearance on "The Tamron Hall Show."
"At first, we thought we were going to have to do different things," the 36-year-old pop star said in a video clip of Tuesday's episode obtained by People. Barrino explained that she was encouraged to try in vitro fertilization with Taylor, 40, but the couple wanted to go the natural route. "This is a three-year journey we've been on," she said.
After seeing a doctor, Barrino was told that one of her fallopian tubes had closed so the couple decided to stop trying for a baby for a while and leave it in God's hands.
"I kid you not, I forgot about it," the singer said. Then one day, she woke up and knew that something felt different. Barrino recalled taking six pregnancy tests and when one showed up as positive, she was so excited she threw the pregnancy test at her husband.
Taylor recounted the moment and shared that he knew God was "going to make this happen" naturally.
"When she threw [the test] at me, I was like, 'Yo, you playing? Are you serious?'" he said. "And from that point, it just increased our faith even more."
Barrino announced her pregnancy last month in an Instagram post in which she briefly spoke of her fertility struggles.
"God I want to thank you! You gave us a seed even when the doctor said that one of my tubes were closed you said different. @salute1st I love you king and I can't wait to see who he or she acts like," she wrote.
Taylor also shared the news to his Instagram followers.
"Dior Diaper Bag: What else would you expect when The Taylor’s are 'Expecting'?" he captioned a photo of himself holding a Dior diaper bag. "Queen @tasiasword Thank You for being all that you Are!"
Barrino has two children, Dallas Xavier, 9, and Zion Quari, 19 from a previous marriage and Taylor has a son named Treyshaun.
